John Fritz and Mary (Leary) Fritz

John , born February 11, 1871, was the first son of Jacob J. and Eliza (Murphy) Fritz . In the 1880 census, he was nine years old and living with his parents at North Mahanoy Creek, Bowmans, just outside of Mahanoy City. In the 1891 census directory, at age 19, he was living at 104 West Centre Street in town and was employed as a laborer.

A marriage license was found in the Schuylkill County Courthouse, Pottsville, in Volume #8, C568, for John Fritz and Mary Leary , born August 20, 1875. They were married June 18, 1897, in St. Canicus Church, Mahanoy City, by Reverend P.C. McEnroe.

In the 1900 census, Mary stated she was married three years and was the mother of one child but it had died. The second child, John, was born October 14, 1900. The third child, Elizabeth, was born January 7, 1902, and died July 18, 1902. She is buried in St. Canicus Cemetery, Mahanoy City, adjacent to her great aunt and great uncle, Thomas and Mary (Murphy) McBreen. The fourth child, Mary, was born in 1903.

John was employed as a machinist in the coal mining industry and probably moved to Philadelphia in 1903. Information was found in the Schuylkill County courthouse death register which stated John Fritz died October 14, 1904, in Philadelphia, at age 32 of appendicitis. He was married, born in America, and buried at Mahanoy City.

In the 1891 directory of the eleventh census of Schuylkill County, Jeremiah and Bridget Leary , who were both born in Ireland, are listed with their children Michael, Thomas, Mary , 15, Johannah, Daniel and Catherine . Jeremiah, 54, was a coal miner; Bridget was the same age. By 1910, Bridget, now widowed, lived at 921 East Centre Street in Mahanoy City. Six of her nine children were living. In the house with her were Thomas, Hanna, Daniel, Catherine, and John Fritz, 9, grandson, and Mary Fritz , 7, granddaughter.

Mary Leary Fritz may have died shortly after her daughter Mary was born and John may have asked his mother-in-law Bridget to care for the children when he decided to move to Philadelphia. It's also possible that John and Mary moved to Philadelphia in 1903 and, after John died, the children were sent to live with Bridget Leary. Unfortunately, we have been unable to determine what happened to Mary (Leary) Fritz after the 1900 census. We have not been able to learn anything about John's move to Philadelphia and why the children were living with their grandmother Bridget during the 1910 census. We also know nothing further about what became of the two children.
