Boilo
Angelina Rachelle F
See cookbook for recipes.
One thing that isn’t mentioned in the Boilo recipes is to strain the fruits and
spices out of the liquid. Using metal can change the acidity of the beverage so
use plastic or cheese cloth if possible. If you cannot get moonshine or wouldn’t
want to, then you can substitute a strong whiskey such as Four Queens. It is
advised that you take care when adding the liquor to the mixture, especially if
you are cooking over a flame of any kind. Don't burn the house down!
The following article about Boilo was taken from an article titled, "How dey talk, Shendo style," found in the
Standard Speaker
newspaper of Hazleton, Pennsylvania.
Everybody has a boilo recipe," Jim Schutawie said of the popular Yuletide beverage. Ingredients include orange and lemon juice, honey, cloves, caraway seeds and large amounts of whiskey, served hot in shot glasses. Making boilo was a leading cause of fires in the region since the mixture cooks on the stovetop. If any of it splashes on the stove, look out!
This beverage is a tradition among many families, often served after mass on Christmas Eve and all through the holidays.
If you don’t want to drink it straight it is wonderful in tea, lemon-lime soda, or ginger ale.
Other favorites of the region include pierogies, haluskie, halupkies, bleenies, sauerkraut, barbecue and many more.
